Syed Abdullah Shah Qadri also known-as Baba Bulleh Shah was a Punjabi philosopher and Sufi poet. Shah Inayat Qadiri, a Sufi murshid of Lahore was his first spiritual teacher. He was a mystic poet and is universally regarded as “The father of Punjabi enlightenment”.
Early Life of Bulleh Shah
He was born in Uch in 1680, during the era of the ‘Mughal Empire’ currently in Pakistan. After getting early education from Uch. He moved to Lahore, where he met Inayat Arian and became his disciple.
Well, he lived after a great Pashto Sufi poet and saint Rahman Baba (1632-1706) and he lived at the same time with the great Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai(1689-1752). Well, the Lifespan of Waris Shah of Heer Ranjha’s fame was also overlapped with his during (1722-1799).
The verse form Bulleh Shah is known as Kafi, also Popular in Sindhi Poetry, and Punjabi Poetry. Many great singers put his Kafi in their music. Such as Pathany Khan, Abida Parveen, Abdaali brothers, Sain Zahoor, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. However, it was also used by UK based Pakistani band Junoon. He died at the age of 77 in 1757. He is buried in Kasur. They built dargah on his grave. During the time of his death, he was declared a non-Muslim by Mullahs of Kasur. Praying his funeral was prohibited by the Mullahs. His funeral prayer was led by Qazi Hafiz Syed Zahid Hamdani, a great religious personality of Kasur. Well, the roof of his shrine or dargah has been decorated and calligraphed with his work.
